Step-by-Step Procedure to File Complaints Against Defective Consumer Goods:

  • Identify and Document the Defect:
    • Inspect the product carefully to identify the defect.
    • Take clear photographs or videos of the defect.
    • Preserve the original packaging, warranty card, and purchase receipt.
  • Contact the Seller or Manufacturer:
    • Inform the seller or manufacturer about the defect as soon as possible, preferably in writing (email, letter, or registered post).
    • Request repair, replacement, or refund as per the warranty terms or consumer rights.
    • Keep copies of all correspondence.
  • Use the Manufacturer’s or Seller’s Grievance Redressal Mechanism:
    • Many companies have customer care or grievance redressal cells. Approach them for resolution.
    • Follow up regularly until the issue is resolved.
  • File a Complaint with Consumer Forum:
    • If the seller or manufacturer fails to resolve the issue within a reasonable time, file a complaint with the appropriate consumer forum based on the value of goods and compensation claimed:
      • District Consumer Forum: Claims up to ₹1 crore.
      • State Consumer Commission: Claims between ₹1 crore and ₹10 crores.
      • National Consumer Commission: Claims above ₹10 crores.
  • Prepare and Submit the Complaint:
    • Draft a clear complaint stating facts, defects, relief sought, and attach evidence such as bills, warranty cards, communication records, and photographs.
    • Submit the complaint either online or physically at the forum.
  • Attend Hearings and Present Your Case:
