How to file a complaint against online frauds in India?

Answer By law4u team

With the rise of digital transactions and online services, online frauds have become increasingly common in India. These include phishing scams, UPI frauds, fake online sellers, unauthorized transactions, identity theft, and more. To protect consumers and bring cybercriminals to justice, the Indian government provides legal and digital platforms for quick complaint registration and resolution. Understanding these processes helps consumers act promptly and effectively.

How to File a Complaint Against Online Frauds in India

1. Collect and Preserve Evidence

  • Screenshots of the fraud or suspicious messages
  • Transaction details (amount, time, payment mode, etc.)
  • Chat or email history with the fraudster
  • Bank/SMS alerts
  • Website or app details

2. Report the Incident on the Cybercrime Portal

  • Visit: www.cybercrime.gov.in
  • Click on Report Other Cybercrime
  • Register using your mobile number and verify with OTP
  • Fill in the complaint form and upload supporting evidence
  • Submit the complaint and keep the acknowledgment number
  • Note: For crimes involving women or children, anonymous complaints can be filed

3. Call the National Cybercrime Helpline

  • Dial 1930 (available 24x7)
  • Report financial frauds like unauthorized UPI or card transactions
  • Quick reporting can help freeze the fraudulent transaction

4. File a Complaint at the Nearest Police Station

  • Visit your local police station or cybercrime cell
  • Include:
    • A brief of the incident
    • All collected evidence
    • Your identification proof
  • The police may register an FIR under the IPC and IT Act

5. Inform Your Bank or Payment Platform

  • Notify your bank immediately to block your card or freeze your account
  • Submit a chargeback or dispute request
  • Banks must follow RBI’s fraud-handling guidelines and may reimburse losses if informed promptly

6. File a Complaint with Consumer Forum (if applicable)

  • For fraud involving e-commerce or online sellers:
    • File a complaint at www.consumerhelpline.gov.in
    • Or approach your District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission
  • Claim refund or compensation for loss or harassment

Legal Provisions Applicable

  • Never share your OTP, PIN, or passwords
  • Avoid clicking on unknown links or pop-ups
  • Enable two-factor authentication on banking and personal accounts
  • Shop only on verified websites with HTTPS security
  • Monitor your bank and credit card statements regularly

Example

A consumer receives a text message stating that their bank account will be blocked unless they verify their KYC. Clicking the link, the consumer enters sensitive details and soon finds ₹15,000 debited from their account.

  • Call 1930 immediately and report the fraud
  • Inform the bank and freeze the account
  • Lodge a complaint at cybercrime.gov.in with screenshots and transaction proof
  • File an FIR at the local police station
  • Request the bank to reverse the transaction and follow up with authorities

Conclusion

Online fraud is a growing threat, but with prompt action and awareness, victims can limit financial losses and bring culprits to justice. Consumers must be proactive, make use of digital platforms like cybercrime.gov.in, and follow RBI and IT laws to ensure their digital safety and rights are protected.
