What Is The Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA)?

The Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) is a regional intergovernmental organization established in 1997 aimed at strengthening regional cooperation and sustainable development among countries bordering the Indian Ocean. It focuses on promoting economic growth, maritime safety, environmental sustainability, and cultural exchange among its member states.

Key Objectives and Focus Areas

Enhancing Regional Cooperation

Facilitate cooperation among member states in trade, investment, and technology sharing.

Maritime Safety and Security

Promote collaborative measures to ensure safe and secure shipping lanes and combat piracy.

Disaster Risk Management

Coordinate preparedness and response to natural disasters such as tsunamis and cyclones.

Blue Economy Promotion

Support sustainable use of ocean resources for economic development, including fisheries, tourism, and renewable energy.

Trade Facilitation and Investment

Simplify trade procedures and encourage investments in infrastructure and connectivity projects.

Cultural and Social Cooperation

Enhance people-to-people contacts and cultural exchange to foster mutual understanding.

Membership

IORA has 23 member states, including India, Australia, South Africa, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Maldives, Kenya, and others from Africa, Asia, and Oceania.

It also engages with dialogue partners, sectoral partners, and development partners to broaden cooperation.

India’s Role

India is a founding member and an active participant in IORA’s initiatives.

India has chaired IORA and advocates for enhancing maritime security, blue economy cooperation, and disaster management.

It uses IORA as a platform to strengthen ties with Africa and other Indian Ocean countries.
