Under the Hindu Marriage Act, there are several grounds on which a petition for divorce can be filed in a family court. The grounds for divorce under the Hindu Marriage Act are as follows: Adultery - If one spouse engages in sexual relations outside of the marriage. Cruelty - If one spouse treats the other with cruelty or mental or physical harassment that makes it impossible for the other to continue living with them. Desertion - If one spouse abandons the other without any reasonable cause and without the consent of the other. Conversion to another religion - If one spouse converts to another religion and ceases to be a Hindu. Unsoundness of mind - If one spouse suffers from a mental disorder that makes it impossible for the other spouse to continue living with them. Virulent and incurable form of leprosy - If one spouse suffers from a virulent and incurable form of leprosy. Please note that the grounds for divorce are not exhaustive, and other factors may also be considered by the court while granting a divorce.
