SIM swap fraud is a cyber fraud where a criminal gets control of a victim’s mobile number by fraudulently obtaining a replacement SIM card or transferring the number to another SIM. In a SIM swap fraud: The victim's original SIM card may stop working suddenly. The fraudster activates the same mobile number on another SIM. The fraudster may receive OTPs, banking alerts, and account recovery messages linked to that number. The fraudster may attempt unauthorized access to bank accounts, email accounts, or other online services. Common methods used by fraudsters include: Collecting personal information through phishing calls, fake websites, or social engineering. Pretending to be a bank employee, telecom representative, or government official. Using stolen identity documents to request a duplicate SIM. If SIM swap fraud happens, a person should immediately: Contact the Telecom Provider Inform the mobile service provider about the unauthorized SIM activation. Request blocking of the fraudulent SIM and restoration of the original number. Contact the Bank Immediately inform the bank if banking details or OTP access may have been compromised. Request temporary blocking of digital banking services or suspicious transactions. Report Cyber Fraud Call the National Cyber Crime Helpline number 1930 as soon as possible in cases involving financial fraud. File a complaint through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal, where applicable. Report the matter to the nearest Cyber Police Station or any police station. Preserve Evidence Keep records of: SMS alerts. Bank transaction details. Suspicious calls. Emails or messages received from fraudsters. Details of the duplicate SIM request, if available. Secure Accounts Change passwords of important accounts. Enable additional security features such as two-factor authentication. Check email, banking, and social media accounts for unauthorized activity. Depending on the facts of the case, SIM swap fraud may involve offences under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 (BNS) and the Information Technology Act, 2000, including offences related to cheating, identity theft, and unauthorized access to digital systems. Quick reporting is important because early action can help banks, telecom companies, and law enforcement agencies trace the fraud and attempt to prevent further financial loss.
