Yes. Hacking or gaining unauthorized access to someone else's Wi-Fi network is illegal in India. Accessing a Wi-Fi network without the owner's permission may amount to a cyber offence, even if no data is stolen. Depending on the facts of the case, the following acts may be unlawful: Guessing or cracking a Wi-Fi password to gain access. Bypassing Wi-Fi security measures. Using another person's internet connection without authorization. Intercepting data transmitted over a Wi-Fi network. Accessing computers, devices, or files connected to the network without permission. Depending on the nature of the conduct, offences under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 (BNS) and the Information Technology Act, 2000 may apply. If the unauthorized access is used to: Steal personal or financial information. Commit online fraud. Install malware. Damage computer systems. Hack online accounts. the offender may face additional criminal charges. The punishment depends on the specific offence committed and may include: Imprisonment. Fine. Both imprisonment and fine. If you suspect that someone has hacked your Wi-Fi network: Change the Wi-Fi password immediately. Enable strong WPA2 or WPA3 encryption. Restart and update the router's firmware. Remove unknown devices connected to the network. Report the incident to the nearest Cyber Police Station if unauthorized access has resulted in a cyber offence or financial loss. Preserve router logs and other digital evidence, if available. Using an open or public Wi-Fi network that is intentionally made available for public access is generally not illegal. However, using that network to commit any unlawful act remains a criminal offence. Therefore, accessing or hacking a private Wi-Fi network without the owner's authorization is illegal in India and can lead to criminal liability.
