If a person becomes a victim of UPI fraud in India, immediate action is very important because quick reporting can help freeze the money and increase chances of recovery. 1. Immediately call the cyber fraud helpline (most important) Dial 1930 (National Cyber Crime Helpline) Report the fraud with details like: UPI ID or mobile number used Transaction ID Amount and time of transfer If reported quickly, banks can sometimes freeze the recipient account and stop further withdrawal. 2. File complaint on cybercrime portal Go to cybercrime.gov.in Select “financial fraud” category Upload screenshots, SMS, UPI transaction details, and bank statement 3. Inform your bank immediately Contact your bank and: Report unauthorized transaction Request transaction reversal or dispute Ask to block suspicious beneficiary accounts if possible Banks may initiate an internal fraud investigation. 4. Preserve all evidence Keep records of: UPI transaction reference number SMS alerts from bank Screenshots of chat or call details (if scam was through social engineering) Phone numbers, UPI IDs, QR codes used 5. File FIR (if required) If amount is significant or fraud is serious: File FIR at local police station or Cyber Crime Cell Legal provisions may include: Cheating and fraud under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 Identity misuse and cyber offences under IT Act, 2000 6. Follow up for refund process After complaint: Bank may investigate and attempt recovery RBI rules provide limited liability protection in some unauthorized transaction cases (if reported quickly) Refund depends on timing and investigation outcome 7. Important legal principle Delay reduces chances of recovery Early reporting (within hours) is critical in freezing money trail 8. Summary After UPI fraud, a person should immediately call 1930, inform the bank, file an online cybercrime complaint, preserve evidence, and file FIR if needed, because quick action is the key factor in recovering money and stopping further loss.
