Dear Client, People from different religions can definitely perform a court marriage in India a specialized framework has been provided by the Parliament for interfaith couples in the form of Special Marriage Act of, 1954. When a couple chooses to perform a court marriage neither of the partner is required to convert to each other’s religion or faith the court sees the marriage as a purely civil contract and completely detached from their religions, customs, traditions, rituals and personal laws. To have a valid marriage under the Special Marriage Act both the individuals must meet the following legal requirements, the groom must be the age of 21 years, the bride must be the age of 18 years, neither of them should have a living spouse from an undivorced marriage and they must not be closely related by blood that is they must not fall within the prohibited relationships unless it is permitted by their custom. Furthermore, by filing a simple 30 day public notice at the local marriage registrar’s office the couple of any religious background can marry under this act and receive a government marriage certificate that will be the legal proof of their marriage.
