Attestation and notarization are both processes used to verify documents, but they are different in authority, purpose, and legal weight in India. 1. Notarization Notarization is done by a Notary Public appointed under the Notaries Act, 1952. A notary: Verifies the identity of the person signing a document Confirms that the signature is made voluntarily Certifies copies as “true copies” of originals It is mainly used for: Affidavits Agreements Power of attorney Declaration documents A notarized document shows that it was signed and verified before a notary, but it does not guarantee acceptance by foreign authorities. 2. Attestation Attestation is a broader verification process done by authorized government officials, institutions, or departments. It means a competent authority confirms that a document is genuine and valid for official use, especially for higher-level purposes like employment, education, or international use. Attestation can be done by: Gazetted officers Universities or educational boards State/Home Department Ministry of External Affairs (for international recognition) It is commonly required for: Educational certificates (for abroad studies/jobs) Birth/marriage certificates Commercial/business documents Key differences Authority Notarization → Done only by a Notary Public Attestation → Done by multiple authorities (government or institutional levels) Purpose Notarization → Confirms identity and signature authenticity Attestation → Confirms document’s overall genuineness for official acceptance Scope Notarization → Mostly domestic/legal documentation Attestation → Often required for higher legal, educational, or international use Simple example A rent agreement signed and verified by a notary = notarization A degree certificate verified by university + government + embassy = attestation In summary Notarization is a basic legal verification of signatures and documents, while attestation is a higher-level certification confirming authenticity for official or international purposes.

Dear Client, while both attestation and notarization are to verify the authenticity of a document, they still provide for different legal purposes and involve different levels of authority of verification. Attestation is the act of witnessing the execution of an instrument by the executant, it serves the twin objectives: Firstly, that it is the executant that executed the registered instrument and secondly, that the executant did it with his own free will. However, it must be noted that an attesting witness does not have an official government seal, nor they are required to verify your identity via state issued documents like PAN or Aadhar. Notarization on the other hand, is a much formal process as compared to attestation and involves a public official called a notary public. The notary’s job is to legally verify the government issued ID’s provided to you and to make you understand what are you signing, further after making due inquiries he stamps the instrument with state's seal that is absent in attestation. I hope this answer helps, if you have any further query kindly do not hesitate to contact us. Thankyou
