Detailed Explanation: Under the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005, an aggrieved woman (which includes wives, mothers, daughters, sisters, live-in partners, and other female members in a domestic relationship) can seek protection and legal remedies against domestic violence. 1. Judicial Magistrate First Class / Metropolitan Magistrate: The primary legal forum for filing a domestic violence complaint is the court of the Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) or the Metropolitan Magistrate having jurisdiction over the place where: The aggrieved person resides, or The respondent (accused) resides, or The domestic violence allegedly took place. The magistrate can pass orders related to: Protection Residence Custody of children Compensation Maintenance Prohibition on the abuser from contacting the woman 2. Magistrates Court: If the Metropolitan Magistrate or Judicial Magistrate of the First Class has jurisdiction over the area a woman may file a complaint there: She lives Either the respondent lives or works Domestic violence took place. 2. Additionally she can seek advice from a Protection Officer who will help her draft and submit the complaint to the tribunal. 3. Police Station: Even if it is not required she is welcome to go to the closest police station so they can notify the Protection Officer or assist in initiating legal action. 4. Online Portals or Helplines: In certain states, online women's grievance portals or helplines may also be used to launch a complaint, but even there, the legal process must be followed up with action through the court.
